Born on October 31, 1964, he commenced his journey as a youth player at EDO in his hometown before moving on to join the celebrated Ajax club in Amsterdam, eventually culminating in his magnificent stint at AC Milan in Italy where he scaled the pinnacle of success. 

The Dutch striker embarked on a professional career spanning over a decade, with 373 appearances and 276 goals to his name. His international career for the Netherlands team comprised 58 appearances and 24 goals. Despite not being athletic, Van Basten's close ball control, intelligence, and flair made him an exceptional striker. His retirement from playing at an early age saw him transition to coaching, where he met with reasonable success.

At Ajax, he enjoyed significant early success. Competing with Wim Kieft for the center forward position, he scored nine goals in 20 appearances in the following season, establishing himself as a formidable presence on the pitch. Over the next four seasons, he scored an astounding 128 times in 133 games for Ajax, winning the Eredivisie top scorer title four times in a row until the 1986-87 season. Following his win at the Cup Winner's Cup with Ajax in 1987, Van Basten became a coveted transfer target for several leading European clubs. During his stint at Ajax, the charismatic footballer clinched three Eredivisie titles, a Dutch Cup, and the UEFA Cup in 1987. AC Milan's Silvio Berlusconi brought Van Basten to Italy in 1987, where he forged a formidable attacking partnership with fellow Dutch players Frank Rijkaard and Ruud Gullit. After an unremarkable first season, Van Basten lifted the European Champion's Cup in 1989, scoring two goals in the final against Steaua Bucuresti. He went on to score 124 goals in 201 games for Milan, winning four Serie A titles, two Champions' Cup titles, Intercontinental Cups and European Super Cups, and four Italian Cups. Van Basten also holds the record for being the first player in history to score four goals in a single Champions' Cup game. Van Basten's 1987 move to AC Milan was a watershed moment in his illustrious career. The footballer extraordinaire went on to clinch three Serie A titles, two European Cups, and two European Super Cups in Italy. His magnificent goal-scoring exploits saw him capture the Serie A top-scorer honor thrice consecutively from 1989 to 1992. Additionally, Van Basten was a three-time recipient of the European Footballer of the Year award, earned between 1988 and 1990.
